The Requirements

This is a prime role for an experienced Distribution Center Manager who is ready to make an impact opening a new facility and building a best-in-class team, processes, and procedures. The ideal candidate will have experience developing new or growing existing teams / operations. To be a strong fit for the role, you will have:
  • A bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university.
  • 5+ years of experience managing a fast-paced distribution center, ideally running two shifts

  • Solid computer skills including MS Office Suite applications (e.g. Work, Excel, PowerPoint) 
  • You must be able to:
    • Analyze current operational processes and apply disciplines to the WMS environment
    • Identify configuration gaps within WMS that negatively impact the distribution operation
    • Make suggestions to improve WMS capabilities and efficiencies
  • Forklift certification
Preferred but not required:
  • Bilingual English / Spanish
  • Knowledge of labor management systems (LMS) both operational and configuration applications
  • Ability to analyze current KPI measurements, identify potential KPI opportunities not being utilized, and apply concepts to WMS environment 
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with the principles of continuous improvement; Lean Six Sigma Black or Green Belt certification is a plus

In addition, you must be willing to travel to visit other distribution centers and meet with other managers for training purposes. For the first few months you will travel to centers located in La Mirada, California, Mount Prospect, Illinois, and Buford, Georgia between 80% and 100% of the time. The Wilmer distribution center will be fully operational by February or March, and travel will steadily reduce as the date gets closer. Post-opening, travel will still be approximately 15% to attend meetings, additional training, etc.

The Role

The Distribution Center
As Distribution Center Manager, you will report to the Director of Distribution located in Georgia and be responsible for the daily operation of our new Distribution Center in Texas. You will plan, direct, and coordinate all restocking and shipment activity through the direct supervision of approximately 30 warehouse employees in a 220,000 square foot facility. We are planning on running two shifts and anticipate the employee count will increase as the need grows, perhaps to 70 to 100 employees. Quick question for you - click here

Your Responsibilities
On a daily basis, you will directly supervise exempt and nonexempt warehouse employees. You will be responsible for the entire employee cycle from interviewing to hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems, clear through to exit when an employee leaves the company.

Through your supervision of workers engaged in the daily operation of the distribution center, you will plan, direct, and coordinate all restocking and shipment activity. You will provide the daily support to direct and control activities and maintain the efficient and economical utilization of facility resources and ensure proper distribution and delivery of outbound orders and inbound receipts.

Managing personnel will be key to your success and take the greatest share of your time. Because this is a new facility, you will help build a cooperative and communicative culture from the ground up. Initial training and employee development will be critical. Additionally, in order to meet your goals, you'll work cross-functionally with multiple levels, titles, and departments. 

Specific duties and responsibilities will include:
  • Developing and maintaining distribution operations business plans to include all program requirements, labor hours, cycle, production costs, and image.
  • Providing support to ensure total commitment to a high level of quality distribution and leadership while meeting or exceeding customer expectations.
  • Establishing production and quality control standards, developing budget and cost controls, and obtaining data regarding types, quantities, specifications, and delivery dates of products ordered.
  • Providing guidance to the development of a manufacturing process plan, including personnel requirements, material needs, subcontract requirements, facility needs, and tooling and equipment needs.
  • Suggesting changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase the efficiency of the distribution center and its employees.
  • Ensuring all established costs, quality, and delivery commitments are met; establishing or adjusting work procedures to meet shipment schedules.
  • Interfacing with other departments to ensure Inter-Branch Transfers, DC Stock Orders and deadlines are met.
  • Coordinating distribution activities with all other functions of the organization and suppliers to obtain optimum production and utilization of human resources, machines, and equipment.
  • Reviewing production and operating reports and directing the resolution of operational, manufacturing, and maintenance problems in order to ensure minimum costs and prevent operational delays.
  • Performing administrative activities associated with the effective management of shop operations, including compiling, storing, and retrieving production data for reports.
  • Determining the responsibilities of assigned organization and staff positions to accomplish business objectives; Initiating or suggesting plans to motivate workers to achieve goals.  
  • Analyzing, solving and assisting employees with work problem resolution.
  • Training and ensuring all assigned employees are aware of and comply with company, government, OSHA, and customer policies, procedures, and regulations.
