As Territory Sales Manager (TSM) specializing in Makita U.S.A. construction tools, products, and applications, you will manage and grow a prime, dense territory in partnership with another Territory Sales Manager located in Northern Virginia. Ideally, you’ll be based in the Baltimore metro area and focus the majority of your attention on that area, however, the combined territory also includes the Washington DC Northern Beltway and Northern Virginia. You will develop a plan in conjunction with the other TSM and strategically work the entire territory.

The Requirements

The ideal candidate for the Territory Sales Manager role will have strong professional sales skills, a solutions-oriented sales approach, experience selling through distributors, and the drive and self-motivation to get out in the field every day. At a minimum you should have:
  • 3 to 5+ years of territory management experience  
  • A bachelor’s degree from 4 year college or university; or 4 years of related experience and/or training; or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • A background in industrial and/or construction sales is preferred
  • Knowledge of the power tool industry, and/or all phases of construction is preferred
  • Polished presentation skills and the ability to deliver effective presentations one-on-one or to a group of distributors or end users
  • Experience selling directly to end users and/or distributors, preferably both
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite applications
  • Solid tool knowledge is highly preferred; actual construction work experience is helpful
  • Bilingual abilities (preferably Spanish) are a plus

The Role

Reporting to the District Manager, as Territory Sales Manager, you’ll be responsible for the planning, management and growth of your account base. You will partner with an existing TSM in Virginia, and work in a team model that has proven successful in other territories around the country. You'll primarily work independently, but some calls will be together. For example, you might share the management of a large multi-location distributor with sites throughout your territory, but work together at the corporate location. Part of your incentives will be based on team performance, and there is plenty of potential here-- each of you will manage a large account base and be responsible for growing existing sales both deep and wide, while also spending time prospecting for new business. Quick question for you - click here

Specifically, you will:
  • Maintain and expand established accounts through direct sales, prospecting, product demonstrations and the promotion of innovative product offerings Quick question for you - click here
  • Focus on key pro-users and job sites with an emphasis on creating a demand for Makita products
  • Schedule and organize demo events, shows, etc. within your territory and upon management request
  • Develop innovative and creative ideas for increasing sales
  • Interface with multiple departments and branches within Makita and your account base
  • Maintain accurate records of plans, initiatives and agreements
  • Provide feedback to your District Sales Manager concerning the total market place, as well as any competitive activities taking place
  • Leverage a pull through strategy encouraging end users to influence dealers in order to increase sales and product placement
Upon joining us, you’ll train with the District Manager as well as with your territory partner, take a product course to get you up to speed with our tools, learn our internal systems and begin developing a strategic sales plan. You'll market to end users, traveling to and calling on large construction companies and local job sites to develop partnerships with the people who actually use our tools, as you also develop strong relationships with dealers. 

By educating end users and encouraging them to make requests to their local dealers, you can effectively create demand for our products and indirectly convince your dealer accounts to increase their Makita product offering, further assisting your sales goals. The ideal situation is when you can approach a dealer and say, "company X wants to buy our products -- do you want to be our partner?" This means sales cycles are a little longer and a little more detail oriented than is typical in construction sales, but you have the ability to work all sides of the process to move it forward to a higher level of success and market development.
