The Role

Reporting to the District Sales Manager, you will be responsible for the planning, management and growth of your territory's account base. You'll manage a large number of established accounts but there is plenty of potential in this territory to also grow the business.

Specifically, you will:
  • Maintain and expand established accounts through direct sales, prospecting, product demonstrations and the promotion of innovative product offerings Quick question for you - click here
  • Focus on key pro-users and job sites with an emphasis on creating a demand for Makita products
  • Schedule and organize demo events, shows, etc. within your territory and upon management request
  • Develop innovative and creative ideas for increasing sales
  • Interface with multiple departments and branches within Makita and your account base
  • Maintain accurate records of plans, initiatives and agreements
  • Provide feedback to your District Sales Manager concerning the total market place, as well as any competitive activities taking place
  • Leverage a pull through strategy encouraging end users to influence dealers in order to increase sales and product placement
Upon joining us, you’ll train with the District Manager and another Territory Sales Manager, take a product course to get you up to speed with our tools, learn our internal systems and begin developing a strategic sales plan. You'll market to end users, traveling to and calling on large construction companies and local job sites to develop partnerships with the people who actually use our tools, as you also develop strong relationships with dealers.

By educating end users and encouraging them to make requests to their local dealers, you can effectively create demand for our products and indirectly convince your dealer accounts to increase their Makita product offering, further assisting your sales goals. The ideal situation is when you can approach a dealer and say, "company X wants to buy our products -- do you want to be our partner?" This means sales cycles are a little longer and a little more detail oriented than is typical in construction sales, but you have the ability to work all sides of the process and drive it to a higher level of market success.

Note: this description is intended to give you a general overview of the position and is not an exhaustive listing of duties and responsibilities.

Pictured: You'll be able to offer the world's largest 18V Lithium-ion line-up, offering corded power and performance in more than 160 tools, from drivers to portable band saws to sanders . . . and more. These tools are jobsite proven and feature industry-leading charge times.

What's in It for You

High-potential territory
In terms of expanding our market share in this territory, you'll have your work cut out for you. That means there is a strong opportunity to score some wins and gain traction early on, but you'll need to work smarter and harder than the competition.

Autonomy and flexibility
While you'll benefit from the support of management and your peers, you and your partner also will enjoy the liberty to set your own routine and provide your territory with the services you deem appropriate for reaching your sales goals.

Career growth
With plenty of room for expansion within, this territory offers an excellent opportunity to leverage your experience and showcase your abilities to build it out. Excel and you could position yourself for a variety of career paths, such as moving into a Key Account Manager position.

Pride and brand recognition
Visit any construction site, and you're sure to encounter a variety of Makita tools. Our quality and performance has earned us a strongly respected reputation within the contractor community, which has persistently grown throughout our history and is certain to endure for many years to come as we continue to lead the industry with the introduction of high quality, innovative tools.

Event participation
As a member of our Sales Division, you will have the opportunity to participate in many of our promotional events across the country.

Excellent compensation
In addition to a competitive base, commission and bonus incentives, we offer one of the most generous benefits packages in our industry, including a company truck; medical, dental, vision, and life insurance; a 401(k) and profit sharing plan; expense reimbursement plans; PTO; tuition reimbursement, and more.

Pictured: demanding applications require maximum power, speed and run time, so Makita created LX2® X2 tools and power equipment powered by two 18V batteries. These products deliver maximum performance without cords, without the hassles of gas, and without leaving the 18V battery platform.

Keys to Success

When you come on board there will be a lot to learn. A good deal of your initial success will depend on your ability to shorten the learning curve. You'll need to be dedicated to knowledge gain, learning everything from the tools to your territory to company processes and procedures.

You'll need a great attitude, along with experience and drive to start making an impact in short order. Before long you should be establishing strong working relationships with your accounts and end users, and be consistently reaching -- or exceeding -- your monthly target numbers, which are very reasonable. You'll also need to be as comfortable in work boots and a hard hat, interacting with construction crews at a job site, as you are in business attire, presenting to executives in a corporate office. To develop and sustain these relationships, you'll need to maintain a highly professional but accessible image, ongoing product knowledge, and a dedication to service.

Lots of job descriptions talk about "communication skills," but in this position they are essential. You'll interact with a variety of internal and external players, and you should take a proactive approach to keeping them in the loop as appropriate. In addition, you should keep the District Sales Manager updated at all times.

To excel in this role you will bring:
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and strong work ethic.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship building abilities.
  • A creative and innovative approach to the market and the skill to present customized solutions.
  • The ability to excel both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
