Opportunity Snapshot

Makita USA's marketing team is on fire, and this position offers you the opportunity to drive some of our highest profile programs, including a multi-million dollar program that is unlike anything our competitors are doing. In fact, while others in our space are scaling back and assuming a defensive posture, Makita is staying on offense, capitalizing on strong momentum and innovative brand strategies. You'll work with fun, high energy projects targeting niches that respond to youthful, exhilarating promotions, including partnerships with high profile brands in action sports, soccer, energy drinks, sports gear, car stereos, and more.

Out of the gate - you will oversee several brand promotional programs, including logistics, coordinating among internal and external contributors, budgeting, creative input, and more. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have three to five years of experience in merchandising, branding, marketing communications, or product management, ideally working with consumer products. You also will need a year or two of experience in a supervisory or management position. Just as important will be your outgoing approach, big picture strategic vision, and roll-up-the-sleeves results orientation.

Makita is a worldwide leader in the professional power tool industry. Headquartered in La Mirada, CA, Makita USA has been bringing Makita's best-in-class engineering advantage to professional power tool users in America since 1970. We ended our fiscal year in March 2008 on a positive note. Plus Makita increased our market share significantly in a decreasing market.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need: You also will need to be willing to travel occasionally, to present at sales meetings or accompany sales representatives in the field.

What's in It for You

Join a marketing team in high gear -- Makita's brand energy is sizzling, driven by aggressive, innovative, and highly targeted strategies. We're lean, efficient, and refined, yet we deliver powerful results . . . just like Makita power tools.

Exciting, fun promotions -- we're targeting professional tool users in the 18 to 35 age range and the Hispanic market (among others) not only where they work, but also where they play. A sample: To get the full flavor of how we roll, check out www.makitatools.com . Clicking on this link will open a new browser window, but be sure to come back to submit your resume!

Solid programs, high impact -- you'll take over well-organized programs (and we'll look to you to keep them that way!) but also have the opportunity to put your personal stamp on them moving forward. We'll hold you to high expectations, not only to deliver fresh ideas, but also to push the Senior Brand Manager (to whom you will report) and the rest of the team to challenge the status quo.

Career development -- we're committed to promoting from within whenever possible and it's not unusual for strong performers to move up and take on additional responsibilities in our marketing department. Depending on your performance and aptitude, you might pursue opportunities in marketing, product management, or sales.

Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary, we offer one of the most generous benefits packages in our industry, including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance; 401(k) and profit sharing plans; vacation time; tuition reimbursement, and more.

More About Your Role

Reporting to our Senior Brand Manager, you will join a Marketing team that includes channel marketing, product management, in-house advertising, emerging markets, merchandising, in-house web development, and communications. You'll have dotted line support from our Brand Specialist, who has solid knowledge of the day-to-day details of the programs you'll take over.

In general, you will assume ownership of various programs, including developing strategies and tactics, managing timelines and budgets, coordinating among multiple internal departments as well as with vendors, monitoring effectiveness and responding appropriately, gathering intelligence, and more. To give you an idea of your activities, here are brief descriptions of three of the programs you'll lead:

A New and Unprecedented Promo
You can expect to invest the majority of your time in our biggest single program that connects the entire Makita brand experience which is targeted to specific demographics. This program will ensure that a potential customer will feel the excitement at a Makita-sponsored action event.

Much of the planning for phase one is well under way, but you'll pick up the development of logistics, such as determining how we'll present the program, setting up a website that support the program and coordinating with vendors. For phase two you'll develop strategies not only for keeping this program fresh and vital, but also for growing it. This will include making it dovetail with other programs.

Premiums and wearables
In this area you'll develop and implement new processes for managing and distributing inventory, including creating web sites with a "shopping cart" function that will enable Sales Reps and others to order inventory based on a budget that you assign. You'll collaborate with our IT people, sales team, and vendors to pull it all together, and manage it on an ongoing basis.

We're also working with a vendor to develop premiums and wearables that incorporate Makita with other brands and our sponsorship items. You'll drive decisions around the specific products, materials, and colors, ensuring this promotion dovetails with others we are running, and monitor inventory.

Point of Purchase Material
You'll implement a proactive approach to discontinuing outdated materials and getting the latest materials -- consistent with our most current brand strategies -- out into the marketplace. This will involve partnering with Sales to determine what is needed and to validate our ideas, and also managing inventory.

Keys to Success

To excel in this role you will bring an upbeat, personable demeanor and the ability to big picture strategy while still focusing on the details. In addition, in order to be an outstanding Associate Brand Manager, you will: If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
